David Rodigan: A Reggae Icon with Global Influence

David Rodigan is a British radio DJ, broadcaster, and record producer who is considered a global icon of reggae music. With over 50 years of experience in the industry, Rodigan has been instrumental in introducing reggae to audiences worldwide and shaping the genre’s trajectory.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Born in Oxfordshire, England, in 1951, Rodigan developed a passion for music at a young age. He was particularly drawn to reggae, which he discovered through the music of ska artists like Prince Buster and The Skatalites. In the early 1970s, he began collecting reggae records and attending reggae clubs, immersing himself in the rich culture surrounding the genre.

Broadcasting Career and Reggae Advocacy

Rodigan’s broadcasting career began in 1978 when he joined BBC Radio London, where he hosted a weekly reggae show called “Roots Rockers.” The show quickly gained popularity, establishing Rodigan as a leading voice in the reggae scene.

In 1979, Rodigan moved to Capital Radio, where he continued to champion reggae music with his show “David Rodigan’s Reggae Show.” The show ran for 25 years, becoming a staple for reggae fans worldwide and showcasing Rodigan’s encyclopedic knowledge of the genre.

Throughout his career, Rodigan has traveled extensively to Jamaica, immersing himself in the island’s music culture and forging close relationships with reggae artists and producers. He has also played a key role in promoting reggae in Europe and North America, introducing the genre to new audiences and helping to establish its global popularity.

Beyond Broadcasting: Production and Recognition

In addition to his broadcasting career, Rodigan is also a respected record producer and label owner. He has produced numerous remixes and compilations of reggae music, including the popular “Dubplate Classics” series. He also founded his own label, Rodigan’s Ruby Records, which releases reggae music from up-and-coming artists.

Rodigan’s contributions to reggae music have been recognized through numerous awards, including the MOBO Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the Pioneer Award at the Black Music Awards.
