Born in a barn some eight years ago, Lakefest was an instant hit and has gone from strength to strength, evolving into one of the best boutique family festivals around.
When: Dates are 8-11th August 2019
Where: Eastnor Deer Park, Ledbury HR8 1EN
2019 promises to be the best yet. The Kaiser Chiefs, Happy Mondays, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and James lead the musical line-up, but Lakefest is so much more than that: With a ‘spoken word’ stage, Junior Talent Search, World Class BMX display, Fun-Fair rides, a host of children’s activities and the best ‘Silent disco’ in the land, all nestling in a perfect Cotswold Valley, overlooked by its own castle, this is a must-not-miss family adventure playground…

Our very own VIP host
Steve Norman, a founding member of Spandau Ballet will be on hand throughout the weekend, to share his experience as a part of one of Britain’s most iconic and successful bands, to hang out with, to share his knowledge during a guided backstage tour and to perform alongside your private DJ, the legendary Joei Supernova, a regular and favourite at The Glastonbury festival artists bar.
Check out our video and interview with Steve below!
We remember you visiting us in 2014, when you got up as a surprise guest and played ‘Through the Barricades’ in the early afternoon, with local Gloucestershire unsigned band ‘Erica’ It looked like you really enjoyed yourself – how do you keep that enthusiasm for live performance after the high of playing to over a billion people at Live Aid?
There is something very special and personal about performing to an audience that is within touching distance. More people does not necessarily make a better show, just different. Having said that, Live Aid was an absolute blast.
Newly formed, unsigned bands tend to have something fresh and exciting to offer which inspires me. If I’m not moved by the music I cant put emotion into it. But if it touches me anything is possible.

This year you are going to be our inaugural VIP host: which of the bands are you looking forward to checking out?
I’m quite excited about seeing ‘The Happy Mondays’. And I’m told ‘Bless’ are well worth checking out. Joei Supernova will be doing a DJ set in the VIP bar on Saturday. My ol’ mucker, Paul Young will be with Los Pacaminos on Sunday, they are always fun. Then there’s Thieves, the Pigeon Detectives…there’s some fabulous bands/artists performing this year: the line up looks better than ever, guess I’ll just camp up at the Mirrorball bar and survey it all from there.
Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin?
Frank reigns supreme but I’m going for underdog, Dean.
Beatles or Stones?
I’ll have the Beatles AND the Stones please.
T.Rex or Slade?
In spite of Slade being the first band I saw live in the 70s (@ the Hammersmith Odeon, now Eventim Apollo) it has to be T.Rex. I performed at a tribute concert to them recently with Tony Visconti, Marc Almond, Holly Johnson, Steve Harley and a smattering of other celebrity fans of Marc Bolan.
The Clash or The Jam?
Tricky one. However, Bruce Foxton is a pal of mine so I guess it has to be The Jam.
Oasis or Blur?
Close call. A dear friend of mine, Robbo, wrote ‘Oasis, What’s the Story’ the best book ever released about the band, according to Noel Gallagher. Robbo is running the VIP experience this year: So Oasis it is.
And Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet…were you rivals, as the media portrayed you?
Pop rivals? Absolutely! We tried to avoid releasing singles at the same time…just in case.
Drinking and party rivals? No contest. Spandau wins hands down.
There are a lot of bands playing at Lakefest who are just starting out: what advice would you give anyone trying to make it into the modern music scene?
Be creative in finding fresh ways to monetise your music or you won’t survive the music business. Keep reminding people that music has a monetary value as well as an emotional one. Work your arses off. Don’t give up. Put your heart and soul into it. Above all, enjoy what you do and have fun!
Which bands influenced you? Which bands inspire you today?
The Faces (mucking about on stage), Steely Dan (sublime musicianship), 70s Stevie Wonder (brought out the soul boy in me), Prince (general awesomeness).
I listen to Radio 6 music by default, love the eclectic approach.
Latest CDs on rotation in the car…Christine & The Queens, Kevin Armstrong (Bowie/Iggy sideman), Last Day Sect (their latest video was directed by my son, Jaco).
